I've been looking at the back of my car trying to figure out how to make a chute mount (3rd Gen Nova) and where to attach it. The problem is my fuel cell outlet comes out right about where a tube that cross connects between the rear frame rails would go. So I've been trying to think how to do it without remounting the fuel cell and moving everything around. It looks to me like I could put the entire tube and mount underneath the bumper and weld it to the bumper brackets and that rear piece of metal that is directly behind the bumper. It looks to me that doing it that way would be even stronger than just the two frame attachment points like people normally have them.

You guys see any problems with mounting the chute cross tube like that?

Doesn't sound like a bad idea. I know the rear end panel is pretty thick. Might not be a bad idea to weld the bumper mounting brackets to the rear end panel. I know it is bolted, but I woould think about welding them anyway. Don't forget to gusset the the tube that will extend rearward.

I think I'm going to try it, seems the way to go on my setup. Hopefully my bumpers will get in soon so I can get started on it.

Any suggestions on chute brands? I've never ran one before and not sure which one is easiest to work with.

I have only had experience with stroud. I have had no problems with them.

I got to digging around looking for mounts and ran across this:

That's the way Wolfe does their mounts, looks like it will work ok. They use that setup on F Body's and mustangs. I think I can modify the stock steel mounts and run the tube into them and bolt the whole assembly in.

that looks like a great way to mount the chute......I just picked up a simpson 12 ft chute with the fire proff pack on e-bay for 105 $ shipped....I love e-bay!!:)

Got that mount mostly done. Going to be tough to triangulate the bar due to the distance I have there, but I think I might be able to make something that is removeable and attach it to the very rear near where the chute cable attaches.

Those are Hardwoods. Took me forever making the mounts trying to get everything lined up straight. My neighbor is going to paint them for me soon, going to try argent silver and see what that looks like.

JOHN THERE IS A PROCESS CALLED "VACUUMETALIZING" IT IS THE PROCESS THAT IS USED TO COVER PLASTIC COMPONENTS AND IT WILL WORK ON FIBERLASSS.

HOWEVER IT IS NOT CHEAPER THAN PAINT IT IS A COSTLY PROCESS AND THERE ARE ONLY A HAND FULL OF PLACES THAT CAN HANDLE THE SIZE OF A BUMPER.

2 OF THEM ARE HERE IN MICHIGAN (GARDEN CITY & CHINA TWSP), I FORGOT THE NAMES BUT I HAVE THEM AT HOME I USED TO USE THEM WHEN I WAS IN THE TOOL AND DIE BUSINESS (LIGHT PACKAGES)

EVERYONE THINKS THE HEADLIGHT BEZELS ARE CHROME PLATED BUT THEY ARE NOT THEY ARE VACUUMETALIZED.

THE VACUUMETALIZER IS A CHAMBER THAT USES AN ANODE AND A VACUUM PROCESS TO PULL THE CHROME TYPE FINISH ONTO THE PREPED SURFACE, THUS CALLING IT "VACUUMETALIZING"

Hi Phil - I actually looked into doing that about a year ago. Found a company in California that had a chamber big enough and he had tried it on bumpers before. He said it will work, but there were several problems. 1st that it's not real durable like chrome, have to be careful with hi-pressure car wash wands. 2nd it will very likely have a rainbow effect on the ends of the bumpers - it's really hard to predict how bad it will be and the biggest problem was there was a $500 setup fee plus per bumper of about $100 IIRC. Not very cost effective unless you were doing them a lot.

I bugged Goodmark a while back about running a special run of aluminum bumpers for 3rd Gen Nova's a while back and they did seem a bit intererested. We'd need to get some kind of group buy going on to make that work though. The plant manager never did get back to me on the $$$ needed.
