I'm digging around looking for places to pull weight out of the car and have been looking at the OEM steering column. This car has a stock type dash (and must retain it per the rules) and I've been trying to think how to put something lighter in for the steering column. It's not a tube frame car and the kits that I've seen for sale are more setup for something you can weld some supports to. Anyone tried making a column that would use the stock mounting brackets, etc. and not look out of place in the car?

I gutted the column in my mustang years ago. The outer tube was metal so I just welded sticks to the dash bar under the dash where you couldn't see them and used a plastic bushing to center a 3/4 inch tube for the steering shaft. Made it look stock but was quite abit lighter
