GRAND RAPIDS - The historical funeral for Gerald Ford brought tens of thousands of people to the city, and forced many city departments to work overtime for security, visitor help and clean up.

At the city commission meeting Tuesday, officials said the bill for taxpayers is around $289,000. They'll dip into a contingency fund to cover the cost of overtime, mostly for the police department.

This cost does not include the cost to other agencies, including the federal government and the suburbs that pitched in.
