Last week I purchased a burger at Burger King for $1.58. The counter girl took my $2 and I was digging for my change when I pulled 8 cents from my pocket and gave it to her. She stood there, holding the nickel and 3 pennies, while looking at the screen on her register. I sensed her discomfort and tried to tell her to just give me two quarters , but she hailed the manager for help. While he tried to explain the transaction to her, she stood there and cried. Why do I tell you this? Because of the evolution in teaching math since the 1950s:
Very similar situation occurred to me a while back. I came up with the change after she had keyed in the even dollar amount. Poor girl looked like she was going to cry so I said "would it be easier if I just kept the change?". She said "Yes". My wife asked why I didn't give her a hard time. I said, "She knows she can't figure it out and was glad when I offered to keep the change. The ones I F*@K over are the ones who are SO stupid they feel they have to argue with me when they return incorrect change to me!"
