Well guys, I normally keep "bad" news to myself but you might be able to help with this one - As a result of GM downsizing I have been "releveled", that is, I'm going from 8th level down to 7th level. That means, after 17 years of driving company vehicles I have to give the Suburban back... So: I need a truck. I have my heart set on a 2002 or so Chevy or GMC duramax crew/extended cab shortbox. Preferably black but I'll look at any dark color. Let me know if you see anything (...except for Scott's truck. He already told me if his truck ever turns up missing he's checking my house first...) Seriously, though - in this economy I am happy to be working.

Should be some good deals out there as the price of trucks really dropped last year... |

There's actually quite a little "sub plot" developing here. I'll try and be brief: When Laura's dad passed away back in August he left two vehicles to the family: An AWD Astro Van and a little red pickup truck - one that I had owned originally and he bought from me. The fam asked me back in August if I wanted it and I had said "no" because I didn't need it. Now that my vehicle situation has changed I am going to fly out and retrieve it and it is going to be my daily driver while we decide what we are going to do. I ordered that truck, a 1987 Silverado, when I was working at the Truck Assembly Plant in Flint. In fact, I followed it down the line while it was being built; I drove it from the plant to the shipping building myself. I left the plant at 1 am and by 5 pm it was sitting in the parking lot at Graff's Chevrolet in Davison. It was a sweet little truck. It's a V6, manual (w overdrive) and I had lowered it and kept it nice. The bad news is Laura's Dad beat it all to heck. I don't know if he was hauling boulders or what but it's years in Arizona/Montana have not been kind. My son has suggested we might "rat rod" it and I am seriously giving that some consideration. Anyway, I was thinking about all this last night and it occured to me: The REASON I ordered this truck back in 1987 was because I was a 7th level engineer and, at that time, we drove company vehicles. The policy changed and VIOLA I was without wheels. I ordered this truck so that I would have something to drive. Now - fast forward 22 years later and here I am again with no wheels, and going to fetch the "little red truck". This little truck has bailed me out twice when my generous employer has said "Ok, you can have a company vehicle - wait...maybe not". I suppose I owe it something for that....

Sorry to hear that, but ya gotta look at the bright side, GM handed you a pay increase! 8th levels will get over double the pay cut on May 1st vs a 7th level. Plus you no longer have to do 2 car payments if you don't want to, ($350mo GM/ 2nd for the Mrs) you can drive more economically now. Personally, I'm just glad that us gearheads are still on the payroll. |

Made it back from Montana with the little Red Truck. Mechanically, it didn't miss a beat the whole way back, got a little better than 20 mpg for the trip, even with the pickup box full of those rocks and tires that you see here. Cosmetically, it needs a little help... My daughters think it is "cute" and are already fighting over who gets it when I die... I've already got the interior out of it, getting ready to replace the seat cover and seat belts. Not sure yet what I am going to do about the outside. K
PS - if anybody has a good source for parts for this style pick up truck I'd be interested to know.... |
