Post subject:  Silly Question... what do you think?

So I was off of work for a few days. I get into my office today and there is a job application on my desk. It is a very basic application.. name address, employment desired, education history and former employers. I have never understood why would someone not fill out an application all of the way. Puts in his address and city but no state and zip code (there is a spot for it) wants to be a driver but nothing as far as what he wants to make or if he is employed. there are no former employers. Now this is where I have a question. For education history there is a place for grammer school (i really do not care where they went to grammer school) but it is blank. high school is blank. He went to community college... years attended is blank... did you graduate... yes... subjects studied... GED. So if you went to a community college to get your GED did you really go to college?

To me that means, he doesn't really want a job and is just hitting his "application" quota so his welfare can continue

The thing is that he is being referred by another employee and really does want to work. I was told by my boss to run his driving record and see how it is. There are some things that I will never understand.

I don't know what your business is but at Hillside Oil, among other things, we deliver home heating oil. Those drivers don't get CEO pay and there is a reason for that. We're able to keep some reliable guys because we don't lay them off in the summer. A driver that comes to work everyday is a good employee to have.
Sounds like he is just trying to make ends meet. Sounds like he dropped out of high school but at least had the common sense to get a GED. If you need a driver I would give the guy a break and at least talk to him, find out what his circumstances are, etc. If the guy is CEO material (or even manager material ( or even sales material  )) and you hire him as a driver he's going to be looking to move on as soon as he comes to work.

We are in the repossession business. I was not aware that we needed to hire anyone but like you said if he is someone that would show up for work everyday... well that would be better then what I have now.
