We are staying downtown... at Penn's Landing. I can see all of the tall buildings out of my window (we are on the 20th fllor). I can see alot of interesting looking places nearby from my window but I am not sure waht any of them are.
About five blocks away is Independence Mall, The liberty Bell, a lot of historic buildings and history around the Declaration of Independence and the revolution. The Betsy Ross house is in this area.
A few blocks further is Reading Terminal Market at 51 North 12th st., the Reading railroad terminated in this building years ago and now it has been changed into a market place. You can Google it.
If you're into the really strange there's the College of Physicians of Philadelphia at 19 south 22nd St. More of a museum of strange medical artifacts. Google that one also. The Philadelphia zoo is ok but not the best I've been to visit.
Across the Delaware river is the USS New Jersey which is open to the public and the New Jersey State Aquarium.
If you're driving out of town to get home Valley Forge National Historic Park is about 20 miles from downtown Philly but near the PA turnpike. A little further from the city is Longwood Gardens. The estate of one of the duPont family which was donated to the State of PA. A really beautiful place to spend a day.
