absolutely you are.

#1: If that data is true, then the japs must make some SERIOUS lemons, because for their entire company has more reported problems with their cars than American cars do.

#2: Cars today are extremely close in quality. Look at the full reports. 131 problems with car A and 133 with car B, then car A must be WAYYYYY better than B right? So screw any social or economic ramifications about buying foreign, I want the car that is 0.0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000001% better in quality. Screw my own job. Screw my family, neighbors, friends, and children, buy foreign!!!! It's nothing more than a lame excuse to me. I've said for years "it'll be a sad day in America when our economy is struggling because of uneducated consumers buying products for the wrong reason than the 3 big fall on hard times and the rest of the country suffers because of it." well guess what?! We're here. it's now. it's happening today. Wait 5 years from now when the rest of the country gets even worse. A recession is coming!

And I know who to point the finger at. I know exactly.

ya was a good read.

Mr jap-lover got owned big time with facts by everyone, and all he could ever come back with was "uh uh! my mommy said so" type crap.

I've had this conversation on a few message boards. Not 1 time has anyone supporting buying foreign won. There's just no facts that stand up to buy foreign. none.

I could not find the full reports. I dont understand what your saying. it sounds like your saying that if the Accord has 131 problems & the Impala has 133 problems, then the implication is that the Accord is a much better car. If that is the case, then it would be absurd to say that the accord is a much bettter car. but that the list does not have ANY Chevy Cars on it, does say something to me. @ first I thought it was an import only list, but there on the "worst" side are a few of the domestic cars.

If the differnece was that small folks would buy it, I would buy it, but its not. dont think Ive tried, I have. I used to own a 98 Grand Prix. I drove it for 3 or 4 years, before I sold it. in the time I owned it, I had to put a belt tensioner on it, recharge the AC in it, brakes on the front (twice) & it got HORIBLE mileage (for a small car). I did all the "tuneup" stuff to it, & when I could not make it any better I took it into the dealer to have them look into it & they could not find anything wrong with it & said "thats as good as it gets".

shouldn't someone try to spend thier money in a wise manner??? I dunno about you, but I dont have lots of money to piss away, on a POC. maybe not for everyone, but for me a LOT more goes into a car purchase than just where its made. mileage, resale value, initial cost, cost of ownership (which very few folks consider), & the usefullness of the vehicle for my needs.

I agree, it sux. maybe the big 3 should take into consideration more than just the bottom line. maybe they should be spending money to educate the consumers how good a product they have. the Asian companies are HAMMERING the market with information on reliability. why aren't the domestics doing it? that indicates to me that either they dont think that the public is concerned about it OR that its not as good as the Asian cars & they dont want to bring atten to it OR that they feel that folks are more concerned with style than quality. It sure looks to me, like they think that style is king.

DONT get me wrong, I would LOVE to buy American products & DO when I can. in fact I go out of my way to find Amercian products (see my post on New Ballance Shoes). BUT I AM going to spend my money where I think its BEST spent. I dont give a crap about styling, I want Quality & durability. so far................ Ive got it.

as I said before, show me where Im wrong. show me the data that shows that the Pontiac or Chevy or Furd are better than the Honda's & Toyota's & I will buy them. in fact I would bet that MOST Americans will.

and i quote bob

good points bob, i would like to buy a american car, i have a american truck and guess what? its a piece of shit! at 3,000 miles the rear differential went out, now i have about 22,000 miles on the truck and the rear is singing to me on the highway again-great i get to take it back yet another time. what am i going to do when the stupid thing does it when im out of warranty?? im going to have to pay for it out of my pocket. pretty laim that one of the big 3 cant make a rear end to hold up to the abuse of my 10 mile work commute. oh while i am thinking about it, my buddy has a colorado with about 30,000 miles on it- his rear end locked up while driving and he almost wrecked the vehicle, Gwatney Chevrolet told him "this is a common problem with these trucks" WTF??? i really want to put my babies in that, let me tell ya... im not saying that imported cars or trucks are superior to the "american made  " ones, but with my personal experiance (i dont read any reports or pay attention to the commericals) with them, they cost more to to keep-maybe i am being selfish but i cant afford to throw it away...

I dont want to bash any manufacturer because they ALL have thier problems, but its things like that that frustrate & iritate customers. Toyota has the same problem with thier "big" SUV's & trucks. add a little tire & romp on it & you chew the gears off of the little ring gear in them. Is that a 1/2 ton truck with a Corporate rear end?

im not trying to single out any of the "big 3" but im just speaking of personal experience. my dodge is a 1/2 ton 4 door. my 01 dodge 1500 i had before that had 3 transmissions before 100k miles. my ford supercrew truck had rearend and engine problems before 80K miles. but its funny that our honda civic with over 100k never had a problem.

There may not be a big difference in the number troubles reported on American and foreign cars, (frankly I there is a big difference) but when you look at the cost of the vehicles vs the number of troubles the "Jap" cars appear to be way ahead.

I've said this before. I put 300,000 on a Honda. My dad, who worked for Chrysler, ragged on me the whole time I had it. When I traded it I bought a Buick Lasabre (just to piss dad off). The salesman tried to talk me into the next model up in the Buick line saying it would bring a higher trade in when we were ready to get rid of it. I pointed at the Honda and said, "That one has 300,000 on it. What will be the difference in your two models when they 300,000 on them?" He just shrugged his shoulders. I bought the LaSabre. at 80,000 miles the timing chain broke. The F***ing service manager (who had serviced the car since new) told me I should have changed the timing chain at 75,000. I told the ahole that if he had recommended I have the timing chain changed it would have been done. I got another engine from a buddie at a salvage yard. At 106,000 the transmission pooped out. That was the end of the Buicks.
I still drive American vehicles because my dad (he's 90) still rags on me when I mention Hondas.

Mass exodus from Ford today

This is it: The big good-bye. The finish line.

Ford Motor Co. had hoped to convince about 10,000 salaried workers to leave as part of a voluntary buyout program that aims to revive the automaker. Today is the last day for many of them.
