Location: EAGLE, COLORADO
IN A NEW 1974 CHEVY SHORT WHEEL BASED VAN, 350, Q-JET, HEADMAN HEADERS, 4.56 POSI REAR END, TURBO 350 AUTO TRANNY.
I RACE IN STREET ET CLASS ON RADIAL TIRES WITH BRIGHT YELLOW JACKMAN WHEELS AND THE VAN WITH MARON. TACK ON TOP OF THE DASH,
22OO STALL CONVERTER.
THE VAN RAN A LITTLE UNDER 15 SECONDS WITH THE HEADERS UNCORKED AND 15 FLAT WITH THE HEADERS AND MUFFLERS.
THE CLASS INDEX WAS FROM 14-18 SECONDS AND THE MUSCLE CAR GUYS USED TO LAUGH AT THE VAN, THEY QUIT WHEN THEY FOUND OUT THEY COULDNT CATCH IT EVEN IN A HEADS UP RACE. I RAN EVERY OTHER WEEKEND AND FINISHED 5 OR 6TH FOR THE SEASON.
EVERYTHING WAS STOCK OTHER THEN THE HEADERS AND CONVERTER, THE Q -JET WAS WORKED OVER BY THE CARB SHOP BRAD URBAN, BEST DANG CARB I NEVER HAD SO FAR. I GOT A FEW STANDING OVATIONS COMING DOWN THE RETURN ROAD AT BANDIMERE WHEN I TOOK OUT A BIG MUSCLE CAR.
THE 4.56 GEAR WAS THE SECRET TO ITS QUICKNESS. MPH WAS AROUND 80 OR SO AS I REMEMER AND I JUST LEFT IT IN DRIVE ALL THE TIME.
I TRIED SHIFTING A FEW TIMES BUT WHEN I BUZZED THE MOTOR PAST 6 GRAND THE STOCK FUEL PUMP RAN OUTTA GAS.
BRACKET RACING IS A KICK.
I GOT SERIOUS ABOUT COLLEGE AND SOLD THE VAN TWO YEARS LATER FOR WHAT I PAID FOR IT A BIG 3900 BUCKS. IT WAS MY VERY FIRST NEW CAR.
